Pregnancy and Healthy Hair – What To Expect While You Are Expecting

Pregnancy and healthy hair different for everyone

There are many changes to a woman’s body when she becomes pregnant, but the changes to a woman’s hair while she is pregnant are rarely talked about. Pregnant women often notice that their hair feels much thicker than it did before they became pregnant.

Pregnancy hormones may change the hair texture or hair growth during pregnancy. That is not to say that every pregnant woman will experience this, the hormones affect all women differently. Some will notice no significant changes to their hair while others experience fast-growing hair that feels much fuller. The increased amount of estrogens will lead to thicker hair on the scalp by extending the hair’s growing cycle.

When do women notice?

The level of hormones starts to increase during the first trimester, so this is likely when most women experience pregnancy-induced hair growth. Even if a woman notices a dramatic difference, the hair often returns to its normal growth pattern approximately three to six months after the woman gives birth.

Popular misconceptions

Pregnant women who do notice a significant difference often assume that their head of hair feels much fuller while they are pregnant, but they are in fact not growing more hair. Whereas almost 90% of our hair is constantly in the hair growth stage, the increased level of estrogen ensures that this level increases even further. This leads to a more luxuriant, thicker head of hair.

Possible hair loss?

Most women have probably also heard that pregnancy is often associated with hair loss. However, this is not until AFTER the woman has given birth. While the woman is pregnant, she will have healthy hair because of the abundance of estrogen.  However, it is possible that the vomiting and nausea will lead to poor nutrition, especially in the first trimester. During that time, it may be a good idea to take supplements to prevent hair loss. Of course, it is always a good idea to discuss that with your healthcare physician before you take anything while pregnant.

Understanding The Telogen Phase of Hair Growth

The telogen phase is the ‘end of the line’ for our hair; this is where the hair follicle rests. The telogen phase can last around two to four months. During the telogen phase, the dead hair cells gather and form a bulb at the root of the hair. Because the hair is disconnected from the dermal papilla, it may shed at any point during the telogen phase.

Moving forward to a new phase

At any point, almost 10 to 15% of the hair on our head is in the telogen phase. Because the hair follicles are no longer provided with nutrients, the hair is thin and weak and it becomes easy to pull the hair out. These are the hairs that we see when we comb or wash our hair. After about three months, most hair in the telogen phase will fall out on its own to make place for new hair that is coming through.

After the telogen phase is complete, the hair follicle will re-enter the growing (anagen) phase. The hair follicle base and dermal papilla join again and leads to the creation of a new hair. If the hair has not been shed already, this process will actually push the old hair out.

Telogen effluvium

While our hair naturally enters the rest phase after a certain amount of time, it is possible to trigger an early entry into this period. This scalp disorder known as telogen effluvium is characterized by shedding or thinning of our hair. This can occur because of physiological or emotional stress, which causes the alteration of the normal hair cycle. Some known causes include drugs, hypothyroidism, crash diets, severe emotional disorders, anemia, major surgery, chronic illness, childbirth, fever, and eating disorders.

Trademarks of the telogen phase of hair growth

During this period, the following is true about our hair:

  • At any point, between 10 and 15 percent of our hair is in the telogen phase
  • We will shed 50 to 100 hairs every day because of this phase
  • The telogen phase will last an average of three months
  • It becomes easy to pull out the hair and once the hair falls, a new hair follicle emerges.

When it comes to matters of the hair you can be sure that there are so many schools of thought in as far as truths and myths are concerned. Well, others are far closer to rumors than myths, but then again the human nature is that way. There are so many make believe stories that have done rounds over the years and as a matter of fact there are so many people who believe them. So is there are connection between your loss of hair and your carbohydrate intake? Well, there are so many views to this question. Lots of people have wondered whether or not this is true, while others are not sure of what to think. In the event that you have been looking for information on the same, you are in luck.

Some carbs are good carbs

According to a good number of dieticians, doctors and scientists there is indeed a link between those two. There are some nutrients that are included in carbohydrates that the body does need for the successful growth of hair. To be precise, the scientists claim that nearly 10% of persons who are on diets which lack carbohydrates usually suffer from hair loss. The main reason for this lies in the fact that they are excluding some important nutrients from their meals. Some of these include Vitamin B and Silica.

Eat your fruits

According to the doctors it is important for you to ensure that in the unlikely event that you are excluding some important food group from your diet, you have to find a way of replacing the minerals being excluded from the same. One of the ways of doing this is to increase your intake of fruits or grain. Much as anxiety and stress are considered some of the leading causes of hair loss, it is important for you to note that the main cause of hair loss in as far as dieting is concerned is lack of iron in the meals. You should always make sure that you are on a diet that guarantees you enough Vitamin C. The reason for this lies in the fact that Vitamin C usually goes a long way in assisting your body in the absorption of iron.
